Garage door safety is just one of the many things we can help provide you with at Mr. Rekey Locksmith. Which is why we want to provide you with a PSA about something that could potentially compromise the security of your garage door. Recently, a security researcher named Samy Kamkar discovered that some garage doors can be opened in just seconds with a hacked children’s toy. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your garage door and home secure.
Fixed Code Garage Door Systems
Fixed code garage door systems are a system that some garage doors use for their wireless remote systems. These systems use a code that is essentially a two-character password (which is very insecure). As it turns out Kamkar discovered this system is easily exploitable with a reprogrammed children’s toy called IM-ME from Mattel (it has been discontinued but can still be purchased on eBay). This hack is known as OpenSesame and can potentially open a garage door in seconds. This could possibly allow thieves to go through a neighborhood in their car and attempt to open any garage door with this fixed code remote system.
Rolling Code Garage Door Systems
Kamkar recommends those who may have a fixed code system replace theirs with a rolling code remote system. A rolling code system essentially changes the code with each button press. How do you know if you’ve got a fixed code or rolling code garage door remote system? Kamkar has a pretty good video explanation that you can see below.
