Drones, perhaps you’ve seen some of these guys buzzing around here and there, or you’ve seen a video on social media of breathtaking aerial views set to some sweet tunes. Well drones or UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), have become a big thing in recent years amongst hobbyists and the general public, and a lot of Realtors and Property Managers have been using them for real estate marketing purposes. From surveying properties to creating stunning photos/videos to market your properties, UAVs have a ton of marketing potential. There’s just one catch, they’re not exactly legal for commercial use yet.
What You Should Know Before Flying
According to FAA rules, the use of drones for commercial use is currently illegal and those not following these rules can be subject to fines up to $10,000. However, the FAA does issue permits for drone use which are determined on a case-by-case basis. Those that do use drones for photographing real estate usually use a get around like charging for video editing services and not the actual use of the UAV. Considering the edge these aerial shots give Realtors and Property Managers, many in the real estate industry are already skirting these regulations because of the highly competitive nature of the industry (we do not recommend that route). There is hope for real estate professionals wanting to take advantage of this new marketing avenue. Congress has mandated that the FAA create clear regulations for unmanned commercial aircraft by September 2015.
It should also be noted that neighboring properties may not be comfortable with what is essentially a flying camera buzzing around their homes or businesses so it’s best to inform them of your intentions before doing so lest you end up in this kind of situation.
What do you think about the use of drones for real estate marketing? Do you think this will be something you’ll be taking advantage of in the future?
